Introduction To Political Ideas

In this course, students are introduced to a number of concepts which have a bearing on how we respond to our political environment, including liberalism, conservatism, Marxism, feminism, equality, liberty, rights and justice. Some of the constraints that affect the application of these concepts to public policy are also examined.

Do NOT take this course if the prof is Gerard Boychuk. Probably the hardest prof I have ever had. There is no textbook, you MUST attend the lectures because of the way he makes the midterms. By that I mean there are 2 parts to his midterms, one being a question about his lectures, and the second one being a question about the readings he posts online. The readings are a pain as well because you either have to read them online or print 30ish pages because thats how long they usually are and the font is tiny. The worst part is that you have to pretty much memorize the readings and the lecture notes because the questions on the midterms are so specific. His slideshows are absolute rubbish, sometimes there is only one slide and no information at all. You are SCREWED if you are sick and miss a lecture unless you know someone in the lecture because no one shares their notes on UW-ACE.
